Opal
Like many birthstones, opal was revered by ancient civilizations. It was especially popular with the ancient Romans. The Roman poet Pliny was especially fond of opal and thought it looked like a kaleidoscope of colors. We couldn’t agree more!
Most opals are mined in Australia, though some of them come from places as diverse as Mexico and Ethiopia. There are many different kinds of opals that are mined in different ways. Did you know that the boulder opal can only be found in one Australian state? That’s right. You can only find boulder opal in Queensland — nowhere else in the world!

Tourmaline primarily comes from Brazil, but it actually can be found in the United States as well. Both California and Maine have tourmaline reserves - how cool is that?!
