It is emerald’s turn to shine! May’s birthstone is one of the most popular gemstones. Its gorgeous green hue is known worldwide and has been beloved for generations. Read on to find out about some of our favorite emerald facts.

Emerald has definitely been around for quite a while. The word emerald actually comes from the ancient Greek for “a green gem.” Like many ancient gems, there are all sorts of legends associated with it. Ancient Roman poet Pliny the Elder believed that looking at an emerald could cure jewelers’ eyes. We’ll have to talk to Claude about that one!
Many ancient people also believed that putting an emerald under your tongue allowed you to see into the future. Emeralds were also thought to make you a good public speaker and to expose liars.
Did you know that Cleopatra is known to have been obsessed with emeralds? Many of her crowns and other pieces of jewelry are thought to have featured emeralds. Emeralds were also connected to ancient Aztec and Inca empires and were a huge part of what was sent back to Spain from “the New World.”

Emeralds are found primarily in South America (especially Colombia) and Africa. Pakistan and Afghanistan are also big emerald producers.
According to the GIA, emeralds do require some special care. The GIA says, “Avoid exposure to heat, changes in air pressure (such as in an airline cabin) and harsh chemicals. Never put an emerald in an ultrasonic cleaner, as the vibrations and heat can cause the filler to sweat out of fractures. Filled emeralds can also be damaged by exposure to hot water used for washing dishes. The safest way to clean emeralds is to gently scrub them with a soft brush and warm, soapy water.”
It sounds to us like any May babies rocking a birthstone ring are definitely excused from doing the dishes tonight!
