We are so jealous of people born in April. Why? Because their birthstone is a DIAMOND!
At Dickinson Jewelers, we love so many different gems: sapphires, emeralds, rubies…but we have to admit that diamonds hold a very special place in our hearts. There’s a reason they’re the most well known. Diamonds are absolutely gorgeous and have some really unique characteristics as well.
All April long, we’ll be focusing on diamonds. From learning more about this month’s birthstone to our Million Dollar Diamond Event on April 22 and 23, we’ve got a lot of fun in store for you. Read on to learn about what makes diamonds so unique!
Many people know how diamonds are made. Diamonds are made up of carbon atoms that, when exposed to specific heat and pressure conditions, form into these precious crystals.
Did you know that diamonds are the hardest material on earth? They’re 58 times harder than any other natural material. Interestingly, graphite is also made up of only carbon, so you can definitely see how important the diamond-making process is. You can write with graphite due to its softness, but diamonds are so hard that they cannot be scratched by any other mineral.
Humans have been obsessed with diamonds since ancient times. From the 4th century BCE India diamond trade to providing fashion and status for Renaissance elites, diamonds have been a hugely desired commodity. One of the biggest game-changers for the diamond market was when diamond mines were discovered in Africa. This introduced a huge amount of diamonds into the economy and totally changed the global landscape. When these mines were first introduced in the 1870s, about one million carats of diamonds were mined annually. By the 1990s, this figure had jumped to 100 million carats.
We could go on and on about diamonds — and believe us, this month, we will! But let’s take a break from learning and check out some of our favorite diamond products that we carry.

Thanks to their amazing symbolism, diamonds have been featured in engagement rings for centuries. We have tons of GORGEOUS diamond engagement rings in store, and we can even custom design one for you. We’re currently loving this ring from Gabriel and Co’s line.
