This red carpet really should be renamed, though, because we’re celebrating something we don’t get very often: a brand new gemstone! That’s right - this is the aquaprase carpet!
Aquaprase literally means blue-green, and it doesn’t take long to look at this gorgeous stone and figure out why. The story behind aquaprase’s discovery is truly incredible.
Gem explorer Yianni Melas was somewhere in Africa (the exact location is a secret) when he realized a local trench was full of a never-before-seen gem. Many doubted that Melas actually found a new gemstone, but independent verification from the Gemstone Institute of America proved that he indeed had found a centuries-old material that had never been discovered. Melas and the GIA have proven that aquaprase wasn’t chemically altered, and Melas told JCK that it’ll stay that way.
“I want to keep it natural, so it is not full of treatments, not even a drop of oil inside,” he said. “We don’t even put wax on the final polish. Our industry needs a breath of fresh air. It needs something that is completely made by God.”
