Anne of Green Gables once said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” and we couldn’t agree more! October is the month of pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin patches, costumes, creepy ghosts, and — of course — tourmaline and opal.
October has two birthstones, and they are both GORGEOUS. This month, we want to highlight both of them because we certainly couldn’t pick between them.
If you’re lucky enough to be an October baby, you’ve got to be on the hunt for these beautiful pieces. If not, that’s okay! The holidays are coming, and it’s easier than ever to make your own wish list. Dickinson Jewelers will make sure your Santa knows you’re on the nice list!
Opal
Like many birthstones, opal was revered by ancient civilizations. It was especially popular with the ancient Romans. The Roman poet Pliny was especially fond of opal and thought it looked like a kaleidoscope of colors. We couldn’t agree more!
Most opals are mined in Australia, though some of them come from places as diverse as Mexico and Ethiopia. There are many different kinds of opals that are mined in different ways. Did you know that the boulder opal can only be found in one Australian state? That’s right. You can only find boulder opal in Queensland — nowhere else in the world!
If you like the classic opal look, we’re big fans of this 14 karat gold opal and diamond pendant. The diamonds set off the brilliance of this lovely opal.
Feeling a little more edgy? This black opal necklace will suit your fancy! The drop necklace features both black opals and pearls for a truly one-of-a-kind look.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t show off this opal to you. The colors in this opal are just to die for! The yellow gold chain and setting make this a pendant we’ll be dreaming about.
Tourmaline
Not unlike opal, it’s hard to pin down a color for tourmaline. Instead of having multiple colors in one gem, though, tourmaline is found in many different magnificent hues. Each different color is supposed to have different powers. Black tourmaline gives self-confidence to the wearer; pink tourmaline is the stone of love; and green tourmaline supports courage and stamina.
Tourmaline primarily comes from Brazil, but it actually can be found in the United States as well. Both California and Maine have tourmaline reserves - how cool is that?!
This green tourmaline ring is an instant classic. How gorgeous would it be as an engagement ring? The halo around the tourmaline is set with beautiful diamonds, making this a ring we won’t soon forget.
Like we noted above, tourmaline comes in many different colors. These amazing earrings have pink tourmaline at their center. We love how each color of tourmaline takes on its own personality and lends itself to so many different styles of jewelry.
