Better Know A Birthstone: January and Garnet

Posted on Sunday, January 15th, 2017 at 9:51 pm by Kate

Quick! What stone can be found in mummies’ tombs, in ancient Rome, and in the Bible?

If you answered garnet, either you’re a genius or you’re super prepared for this month’s installment of Better Know A Birthstone. (Let’s go with the former, shall we?)

January’s birthstone, garnet, is a brilliant red color with a hint of sophistication. There’s a reason that garnets are traditionally used in signet rings: the wealthiest of ancient Romans knew this stone meant business! Clergy and nobility considered garnet to be fairly flawless, so it became one of the most widely traded stones in the Roman Empire. It is also considered by scholars to be one of the Biblical stones that God gave to King Solomon. Warriors carried it into battle, thinking it would protect them and heal any wounds.

Garnet’s notoriety wasn’t surprising given its history as the most prized stone a pharaoh could present to the gods in the afterlife! Many mummies were decked out in garnets. The Egyptians believed that garnets were the stone of life and made sure to inlay garnets in all types of jewelry.

While Dickinson Jewelers doesn’t have tons of experience in the mummy-making business, we do have plenty of experience when it comes to finding amazing garnets. This stone is so gorgeous - how could we not? If we had to pick one emoji to describe how we feel about this stunning garnet pendant, we’d go with the heart-eyes emoji, no doubt!

Like many gemstones, garnets come in a wide variety of colors. However, the red color is what’s traditionally considered to be January’s birthstone. This variety of garnet is primarily found in Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand but is popular worldwide. We think it looks particularly stunning next to chocolate diamonds in this ring by LeVian.

Due to its rich color, garnet is a show-stopper in so many different pieces of jewelry. From simple pendants to elaborate tiaras, garnet is simply eye-catching. This delicate pendant is a statement on its own. Paired with other gems, this necklace still shines. Garnets are particularly trendy right now as they are very similar in color to the 2015 Pantone color of the year, marsala. This means they’ll go perfectly with many items already in your wardrobe!
